About Joshua Waldman
I began teaching social media when I realized that the internet marketing skills I had acquired from running my own business are directly transferable to finding a job. So as my own business started to dry up, I began to use these skills to market myself for job interviews. And I was super successful.
That’s when I began offering classes to job seekers on how to use social media.
I’ve been using social media for my career since 2006 and business consulting since 2001. In 2006, I started the LinkedIn group for “Cisco” that now has 22,000 people in it. Yikes. I don’t think HR is happy with me, it’s like a shark tank for head-hunters in there.
I’ve worked with both businesses and individuals on a variety of Internet marketing and branding issues. The job seekers I work with learn a ton about using social media and really stand out from the crowd. I’ve helped them develop strategic marketing plans, scripts and powerful profiles that get them noticed. One client took my advice and the next day received 17 emails from recruiters.
I grew up in Providence RI, then I went to undergrad in Providence, RI. So when the opportunity to move as far away as possible presented itself, I took it. Actually, that book about the dude who sailed around the world inspired me. And I’ve always wanted to learn Tibetan Language. So I studied abroad in Nepal, in a Tibetan refugee community. And I just stayed in Asia for the next 3 years. When I took the job with Cisco, I was moved to the desert on assignment. So, after Cisco, we moved up to Portland, where it rains, has four seasons and st
ill has the groovy west coast vibe.
I met my wife during a translation gig on a Buddhist forum. She was learning about meditation from a monk-friend of mine from Bhutan. I was charged with translating from Tibetan to English for her. The problem was that she was super cute! And smart and funny. So we got talking, and she called me first. We’ve been married 2 years, and I even got an 11 yr old daughter and a Pomeranian with the package!
My wife comes from Indonesia where she never had a chance to learn and go to school. Basically Oprah taught her English. Now, in community college, she is on fire and brimming with joy and excitement. I am very proud, but she doesn’t like it when I brag.
I’m a big fan of a Foundation called the Cause and Effect Foundation because the guy (Adam Carter) basically raises money by selling beer at Cub stadium in Chicago, and gives the money to local businesses in developing countries. No bureaucracy. No BS. Just pure empowerment to folks who deserve it.
Despite my travels, and my passion for other cultures and languages, I would never give up my American Citizenship. This is still the country of freedom, where smart ambition is rewarded. It only cost me $50 to buy my business license. Tell me a country where professional aspiration is so easy to actualize!
